Neuropathy FAQs
What is a neuroma?
A neuroma is a noncancerous nerve tumor that grows between the bones in your toes. The most common area for a neuroma is between your third and fourth toes. When you have a neuroma, it can feel like you’re walking on a bunched-up sock or have a small rock stuck under the ball of your foot. Neuromas are painful and often cause burning or tingling sensations as well.
How do you treat neuromas?
At Foot & Ankle Specialty Clinic, Dr. Martin offers all kinds of neuroma solutions. Most patients get great results from conservative care, including shoe padding, shoe inserts, and prescribed stretching exercises. Cortisone, anesthetics, medications, or alcohol injections directly into the neuroma can be effective in deadening sensation to stop burning and tingling.
For severe neuromas that don’t respond to conservative care, Dr. Martin can perform a surgical procedure to remove the nerve causing your symptoms.
What is neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the legs and feet. This type of neuropathy is common among men and women living with diabetes, as it’s often a result of uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Other possible reasons for peripheral neuropathy include foot trauma, infection, and autoimmune disease.
Neuropathy causes significant inflammation that often leads to shooting or stabbing pain. You may also have tingling, burning, and periods of numbness.
